A new company, Serious Games Interactive, is breaking onto the scene with Global Conflicts: Palestine, a game designed to educate players about the Israel-Palestine conflict. The gamer plays as a journalist reporting on the surrounding events. Various actions increase or decrease your “trust” (in WoW, this is known as “reputation”) with the two sides. A company spokesperson explains that “Trying to stay neutral is the hardest thing to do.”
One of the questions is how to market this game. Serious Games Interactive is targeting schools. You can read a good article on the Business Week website here. The article also hints at what may come next for Serious Games: “Looking to the future, Nielsen says the idea will be to drop the lead character into other war zones in Global Conflict sequels. The next game is going to take place in Latin America, specifically in Bolivia, Guatemala and Columbia.”
The game’s official website is here, but there’s not much information yet. In closing, I do find it extremely interesting that a game company that is ostensibly working to educate and build bridges of understanding about the Israel-Palestine conflict would choose to title the game Global Conflicts: Palestine, not Global Conflicts: Israel, or Global Conflicts: Israel/Palestine, or…you get the point.
