Animator vs. Animation

March 20th, 2007 by Brian · 2 Comments

I stumbled across an old Flash-based short, ‘Animator vs. Animation’, and discovered that the creator had recently released a sequel (the aptly-named ‘Animator vs. Animation II’). Upon watching both movies, the first thing that came to mind was what we had covered a long while back: how games represent and reflect reality, what defines Agon, and the continued reliance of video games on Platonic mimesis.

More specifically, I thought immediately of the old Felix the Cat cartoon and ‘Duck Amuck’. Either way, both ‘Animator vs. Animation’ Flash movies are random in plot (great choices in battlefield), creatively executed (and how often they ‘break’ the fourth wall), and above all, highly amusing.

That’s great! I particularly like how the interaction expands off the ‘playing field’ (i.e. the drawing area) and into the ‘real world’ (i.e. the toolbars). A good example of blurring of boundaries.

I’d seen the first before. It reminded me how awful Flash is. The second is awesome, out of this world. Love how the eraser’s function is reinterpreted (shield, then projectile) yet also retains its original function (eraser). ~g
