Chinese WoW players, killing each other?

May 11th, 2007 by Gabriel · 3 Comments

A follow-up to Brian’s post just earlier, it seems like WoW is an aberration in its ability to appeal to both Eastern and Western user bases. I found this article that talks about the difference. Seems like the two gaming communities are very disparate, but something about these results seems dubious to me. Am I the only one who feels like there are unstated value judgments in the options?

    – Quantity and quality of item acquisition vs. the process of item acquisition.
    – Guilds for play advantage vs. guilds for relationship building.
    – PvP play vs. PvE play.

Maybe I’m prudish in my thinking, but I find the drastic difference to be startling. Check the article for the numbers.

I played with 3 characters in Asian server and usually played with other Koreans before my GU life (lol), and now I’m leveling one new character in the US server. What I really feel everyday is that the play styles are soooooooo different from each other! But each style has both strong points and weaknesses. (Not necessarily weaknesses, though. They might have been optimized according to each culture.) I don’t have any difficulties and enjoy both. But maybe I need to create and play different races here so that I can logically compare those two styles..

Ok, maybe I’m being naive. Or need to be more Huntintonian or something. Given your experience, Soyoun, are the differences as drastic as the article suggests? Do you think the article has some value judgement loaded within its categories? (And, yes, I bet both styles of play have their strengths and “unstrengths.” What are the differences you see??

Hard to make a sufficiently solid answer now.. (I said I need to play more for further examination haha.) But it was quite interesting article and I’ll keep comparing those two styles; we can discuss again soon!
Anyway, for me, WOW seems to *tacitly* support PKing. That’s why they run lots of PvP servers; and they are usually so busy! Moreover, according to my own experiences, players who prefer PvP servers had better understanding of the skills of their characters and more efficient control ability than PvE players, I mean in average.
