We’re snowed out. No class: The University has closed as of 4PM.
If you’re looking for something to do during the course time, here’s a quick-and-dirty version of the assignment I was going to give you this PM:
(1) Take a photo of a “magic circle” in the real world; ideally, the photo will hint at boundaries, will include players, and will suggest something of the nature of the game being played, and the society that engages in the game.
(2) Take a screenshot of a “magic circle” within Second Life, Warcraft, or some other synthetic/virtual world. The phenomenon of the “minigame” is common in video games - - but what do virtual magic circles look like? how does play exert itself, even in an environment which is itself already conditioned by play? How does one “wall off” a game in a synthetic world? What do virtual player-gamers look like?
This is just a quick post to help you to make the most of your time this PM, if you choose to. I’ll put up a more complete set of instructions later this PM.

You know, every time we talk about Second Life I’m thinking we’re in the Metaverse.

“You know, every time we talk about Second Life I’m thinking we’re in the Metaverse.”
Well, we are…aren’t we?
I enjoy thinking about it that way too.
