In a recent interview, WoW’s VP of game design, Rob Pardo, discussed the creative process behind the development of WoW, its updates and expansions, and its future.
Pardo compared the WoW development process to that of a sitcom. Drawing parallels between his team’s development process and that of the writers of Lost and Seinfeld, Pardo argued that the biggest challenge to his team is developing “episodes” that remain true to the story, theory, and content of the game, while at the same time keeping players interested with new content and experiences.
I think that is interesting to think of WoW in this light, as a popular evolving story that is shaped and changed with its audience (fans) in mind. If WoW developers can succesfully maintain this creative development process, perhaps they can rival the most popular sitcoms and create a longer lasting product, driven by their ability to create an interactive storytelling environment.
